USA best selling cars – 2019

Trucks continue to lord it over the U.S. market in 2019 according to compiled car selling USA data.

No real surprises there as the trend of consumers choosing trucks over cars continues. Crossover vehicles are tailing a bit behind mixed in with some of the most well-known and loved sedans further aback   Again, these are not totally unexpected outcomes during a year when auto sales slightly went down by 1.4% compared to the previous year. It is interesting to note though that while passenger car sales dipped; sales of SUVs, minivans and trucks increased by 2.8% from 2018.

Ford Motor Co. may have recorded a 3% decline in sales last year marked by a relatively poorer performance during the 4th quarter but its F-series emerged on top of the heap anew.  It’s the runaway leader with 896,526 units sold, over 260,000 units more than the year’s second placer.  As shown by car selling USA information, another Ford product made it to the Top 20 (no, it’s not the Explorer), the Ford Escape, which sold 241,388 units to land in 14th.

Fiat Chrysler sales also dipped by 2% from 2018 but car selling data showed that the company’s Ram pickup accelerated strongly to cop second place in the standings, moving 633,694 units.  It was a statement year for the Ram as it made an 18% improvement in year-over-year sales. You can say that Ram literally rammed the competition in 2019 so it’s pretty exciting to see where 2020 will take this beast.

The vehicle in third place is another truck, the Chevrolet Silverado, supplanted by the Ram in the race for runner-up position.   Based on car selling USA tabulations, it sold 575,600 units, still an impressive number despite a 2% decline from the previous year’s sales.

Leading the charge of the SUVs is the Toyota RAV4, at fourth place with 448,071 units sold.  The figure is 4.9% higher than in 2018. Number 5 is the Honda CR-V, selling 384,168 units, up by 1.3% to round out the top five.   Based on car selling USA data, the Nissan Rogue, which comes in the Rogue and Rogue Sport variants, may have suffered a 15% drop in sales but ended up in sixth at 350,447 units.    The popular Chevrolet Equinox had better sales in 2019, up 4% to 346,048 units.

Car selling data further showed that spots 8 to 10 were taken over by the charge of the passenger cars brigade: the Toyota Camry (336,978) as still the most popular sedan at 8th; the Honda Civic (325,650 units) at 9th, and another Toyota, the Corolla (304,850 units) at 10th.

Outside of the top ten, car selling data indicated that Toyota had two other entries: the Tacoma (12th), and the Highlander (15th); JEEP with three: Grand Cherokee (13th), Wrangler (17th) and Cherokee (19th); Honda, GM, and Nissan with one, the Accord (11th); Sierra (16th) and Sentra (20th).  It bears mentioning that based on car selling USA info, the Ford Explorer wound up at the fringe of the Top 20, finishing 21st

In summary, U.S. vehicle sales went down to 17 million units as against 17.2 million in 2018 according to car selling USA.

Passenger car sales fell by 10.9% from 5.3 million units the previous year to 4.7 million – a 10.9% decline. On the other hand, trucks, minivans and SUVS sold 12.2 millions units, a 2.8% rise from 11.9 million in 2018.

It would be interesting to see whether the trend of trucks outselling sedans will continue in 2020 and if new, updated car selling data would show the Ram continuing its phenomenal performance to batter perennial leader, the Ford F-Series, and ascend to the top.
